広重が感動した薩埵峠からの富士山

皆さんも良くご存じの 1800年前半に活躍された浮世絵師 歌川広重が３７歳の時に「東海道五十三次」を発表しています。この作品には遠近法が用いられており、立体的な描写などで、当時の人々が憧れた外の世界を垣間見る手段としても大変好評を博したようです。その中に当時の宿場町 由比(由井)と興津の間にある薩埵峠から描いた絵が残されています。

由比宿から興津宿の間は、大井川などと並び東海道の難所と言われたところで、薩埵峠を越える「中道」が切り開かれましたが、数キロに渡って険しい山道が続くところです。しかし、険しい峠を越えた旅人には、旅の疲れを吹き飛ばしてくれるような素晴らしい富士山の雄姿が眼下に広がる海とともに見えることになります。絶景を目にした広重の興奮が伝わってくるような一枚。広重の作品は、欧米では大胆な構図などとともに、青色、特に藍色の美しさで評価が高く、 「ヒロシゲブルー」 と呼ばれているそうです。

今の薩埵峠には、斜面にみかん畑もつくられ、眼下には左から在来東海道線、国道１号線、東名高速道と大きく変貌した姿が見えますが、その右手には、広重の時代と変わらない 「ヒロシゲブルー」 の海が見えてます。そして、その先には、同じく富士山が燦然と輝いているのです。
